Rapid Spin allows Blastoise to spin away entry hazards such as Stealth Rock and Spikes, which can greatly damage the tortoise's teammates. Rapid Spin, in conjunction with Foresight, allows Blastoise to spin away entry hazards against Ghost-types, who would otherwise prevent you from doing so. This makes it incredibly hard to stop Blastoise from spinning. Scald is the STAB move of choice, giving Blastoise a chance to burn the opponent, making it much easier for him to take physical hits. The last slot depends on whether you want Blastoise to hit Grass-types for super effective damage, or if you want him to support your team. Toxic can be used to deal damage to bulky Water-types such as Milotic, or other Pokemon who would otherwise take little damage from this. Dragon Tail can be used to shuffle through your opponent's team while still dealing damage. It is recommended over Roar because it is not stopped by Taunt, deals damage, and allows Blastoise to hit Magic Bounce Xatu.

The given EVs and nature give Blastoise as much physical bulk as possible. Although a Bold nature is preferred, a Calm nature can be used as well in conjunction with Scald. Blastoise already has an excellent Special Defense stat, and this means Blastoise prefers to be hit from the special side. If you opt for a Calm nature, an alternate spread of 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD is recommended. Roar allows Blastoise to shuffle the opponent's team, shift out threatening sweepers, and cause damage from entry hazards. Unlike Dragon Tail, Roar doesn't have to worry about Pokemon with Substitute, as Dragon Tail will not often break a foe's Substitute. Haze removes all stat modifications of the opponent's Pokemon. This allows Blastoise to stop set-up sweepers and Baton Pass teams, even those which can prevent phazing. Roar is generally the better option over Haze unless the opponent has a Magic Bounce Xatu. Grass-type Pokemon work very well with Blastoise, resisting both of his weaknesses. Roserade is a perfect example of this, sporting a 4x resistance to Grass-type attacks, a 2x resistance to Electric-type attacks, and access to Spikes and Toxic Spikes. This allows Blastoise to use Roar or Dragon Tail and shuffle through the opponent's team, causing damage and poisoning the opponent. Chansey has an enormous Special Defense stat which allows her to take special attacks aimed at Blastoise. Chansey can also provide Blastoise support from Wish, Stealth Rock, and Heal Bell.

    Altre Opzioni

Other than the options listed, Blastoise has a few alternatives. A set consisting of Rapid Spin / Scald / Rest / Sleep Talk could be used, as Rest is Blastoise's only way of recovery. This allows Blastoise to come in more and support his team longer with Rapid Spin support at the cost of not being able to hit Ghost-types with Rapid Spin due to not having Foresight. Due to the new sleep mechanics in the 5th generation, this could leave Blastoise as set-up fodder for many sweepers, especially since Blastoise no longer has access to Roar or Haze. Blastoise could run a viable Choice Specs or Choice Scarf set. If a Choice Specs set is chosen, Blastoise should use a Timid nature with an EV spread of 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe. If a Choice Scarf set is chosen, use a Modest nature instead, while maintaining the same EV spread. A movepool consisting of Water Spout / Hydro Pump / Ice Beam / Hidden Power Electric is recommended on a Choice set. Blastoise does a lot of damage with Water Spout, especially with Choice Specs equipped, and can act as a revenge killer with a Choice Scarf equipped. This set is extremely surprising as well, and can net a KO just from the surprise factor.

Blastoise gets the ability Rain Dish from the Dream World. This ability is useless outside of Rain Dance, and prevents the use of certain moves such as Yawn, Water Spout, Foresight, Sleep Talk and Haze, so Torrent should be the ability used generally. However, Rain Dish on a Rain Dance support set could prove quite useful, recovering 1/16th of Blastoise's HP each turn, allowing him to stay alive longer and, of course, support his team with Rain Dance support longer. With Rain Dish, Blastoise is an excellent check to Rain Dance teams as well; backed up by his natural bulk, Rain Dish, and resistance to their STAB Water-type attacks, it will be hard for them to take Blastoise down.

    Controlli e Counters

Although it is hard to stop Blastoise from doing his job of Rapid Spinning, any set without Ice Beam allows Grass-types to come in with impunity and threaten him with super effective attacks, especially those with the ability Natural Cure to rid them of a possible burn from Scald or Toxic. This includes Grass-types such as Roserade (who is even immune to Toxic), Celebi, and Shaymin, all of which have a great Special Defense stat and can take little damage from Blastoise's attacks outside of Ice Beam.
